What is Mindfulness?

Modern mindfulness is a non-religious form of meditation. Whilst most definitely having roots in ancient Eastern philosophies, mindfulness was adapted and developed in more recent times to help people manage their chronic stress, anxiety, depression and pain in a clinical environment. Through practising a regular combination of mindfulness activities such as meditation, breathing techniques, awareness, movement and cognitive exercises, research has shown that it is possible to gain a wider perspective on our lives, relate more lightly to situations and have a greater sense of ease of being. In fact, one research paper has shown that depression relapse rates may be reduced by up to 43% (Mark, et al 2014) if Mindful Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is practised regularly. Following that research study, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommend MBCT as a treatment for people who suffer from recurrent depression.

Mindfulness is a ‘gym for the mind’ and through regular mindfulness practice people may see an improvement in the following:

• stress and anxiety levels
• chronic pain management
• breaking habitual thoughts
• reacting in a more positive way
• attention \ concentration
• awareness
• patience
• memory
• sleep
• resilience
• general wellbeing

N.B – Whilst a research study shows that regular mindfulness practice can significantly reduce relapse rates for depression, it is best not to take part in an 8-week course whilst suffering from depression or other mental health issue and to wait until you are feeling better.

The 8-week course

This is a comprehensive Mindfulness for Wellbeing course, which closely follows a combination of the two mindfulness models, Mindful Based Stress Relief (MBSR) and Mindful Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), which were developed by Drs. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale at the University of Toronto

The next course starts Wednesday, 18th April through to the 13th June (no session on the 30th May) at 10.30 – 12.30 at The Wellness Centre and the cost is £260.00
